A coffee table with three piles of neatly stacked magazines sat in front of Lottie in the waiting room of the dentist. She was sitting with Dimitri waiting for an appointment and they were going through the bookings for the Secret Evenings Overlooking the Bay event at the top of the cliff.

After the meeting with Gary, inspecting the facilities in the kitchen, and realising that the event would be fairly simple to carry out, Lottie had knocked out a menu as quick as a flash and they’d got the ball rolling as promptly as they could. They’d locked in the date with Gary, checked that Phia would be available to help with the serving, Dimitri had done the figures, and they’d decided to take a chance and send an email notification to the Secret Evenings mailing list and see what happened.

Four hours after the email and gone out, the remaining places after Railway Gary’s sister and brother-in-law and Lucian McIntyre had a spot, were gone. Dimitri had been adamant that they charged a what he had called ‘boutique’ price which Lottie had gasped at but, amazingly, the tickets had been snapped up in record time. Lottie had been beside herself with happiness that it had gone well.

Dimitri looked up from his iPad as they sat in the quiet waiting room waiting to be called. ‘It’s really strange, but even though there’s more financially riding on this because we have to pay for this venue we’ve got all the systems down pat so well now that it seems as if we could do it with our eyes shut.’

‘Yeah. It’s all down to the menu being easy and sourced for as low a budget as possible,’ Lottie agreed. ‘It makes the decisions easy and the possible problems simple to deal with when there’s not a huge amount of money to be lost.’

‘Your garden produce is the clincher. I mean look at this costing,’ Dimitri said as he ran his tanned finger down the spreadsheet. ‘A lot of that is free because it’s from the garden,’ Dimitri said, uncrossing his legs and sitting back in his chair.

‘Hmm. It would be a whole different ball game without that in terms of the profit,’ Lottie acknowledged.

‘Plus there is, of course, us two working on it and then Connor’s involvement. I don’t think it would look quite as healthy if we had to pay anyone else apart from the waiting staff.’

‘No, it wouldn’t. There’s no doubt about that,’ Lottie replied.

‘What’s helping in this one too and why it seems easy is that view. We don’t need a theme or much decor at all. Looking out over that is enough. It takes off a lot of the pressure.’

‘Yup. A tablecloth, a bunch of flowers, the food and the views all the way down the coast to Newport Reef. My kind of Secret Evening.’ Lottie laughed.
